Abstract Painting Workshop

This abstract painting workshop is the perfect opportunity for beginner and experienced artists alike to explore their creativity and learn about abstraction. We will use acrylic paint to explore basic color mixing, brush techniques, and textures. We will learn about historical abstract styles and techniques and some of the great abstract artists that we can look to for inspiration. We will discuss the principles of abstract art and practice creating our own compositions. There will be ample opportunity to share our ideas and artwork with the class and receive feedback. At the end of the workshop, each participant will have created a unique abstract painting that they can take home with them. Join us and explore the exciting possibilities of abstract art!

Art Talk, Painting, & Motown

This freestyle painting class is a unique experience that not only lets you explore the creative side of art but also gives you the chance to listen to some of the greatest hits from the Motown era. Upon arrival, you will be provided with all the necessary materials to create your own masterpiece. Each student will be given a canvas and a selection of paints to choose from. During the class, the instructor will provide guidance and tips on how to create a beautiful painting.

At the same time, you will be able to listen to the best of Motown music. The instructor will use this music to provide a cultural backdrop to the class, letting you learn more about the history of the Motown era. The instructor will provide some background information on the songs and the artists who created them, giving you a better understanding of the era as you create your painting.

We will explore the life of James Baldwin as we paint a large-scale portrait of this literary giant from various perspectives. We will explore a variety of Black American artists' histories and how they played a role in the growth and evolution of contemporary art. We will explore color theory and a variety of painting techniques.

In this three-hour workshop, you'll learn about the lives and works of various Black American artists and how they shaped contemporary art. You'll also learn about color theory, painting techniques, and the history of African-American art.

Everything you need to create your masterpiece is included. Paints and 16"X20" Canvas. (You may want to bring something to protect your clothes. or wear something suitable to paint in).

In this class, we will be enjoying some classic music while we paint. There will be some fun and interactive exercises involving the songs that we listen to as we paint.

Some of the areas we will explore while creating the piece will include:

1. How to mix your colors

2. Adding life to the painting

3. Adding accents

4. Creating dimension and character

I am certain that after incorporating the tips learned here, you will be able to transfer the skills to other creative pieces.

Who is Lois Mailou Jones?

Visual artist Lois Mailou Jones was born in 1905 in Boston, Massachusetts to Thomas Vreeland and Carolyn Dorinda Jones. Her father was a superintendent of a building and later became a lawyer, her mother was a cosmetologist. Early in life Jones displayed a passion for drawing, and her parents encouraged this interest by enrolling her in the High School of Practical Arts in Boston where she majored in art. In 1927, Jones graduated with honors from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and continued her education at the Boston Normal School of Arts and the Designers Art School in Boston.

Aaron Douglas came to Harlem in 1925, full of dreams and aspirations to work as an artist in New York. He left a secure position as a high school teacher in Kansas City, Missouri, and risked coming to a city where he had only one acquaintance. This was characteristic of him. Douglas was an artist who would take risks his entire life and he would also provide us with a template that inspired generations of Black American artists.
