Lois Mailou Jones, (born November 3, 1905, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.—died June 9, 1998, Washington, D.C.), American painter and educator whose works reflect a command of widely varied styles, from traditional landscape to African-themed abstraction.
Jones was reared in Boston by middle-class parents who nurtured her precocious talent and ambition. She studied art at Boston High School of Practical Arts, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Designers Art School of Boston.
